Before proceeding, it is always a good idea to back up all the data you have on your phone through iTunes.
DISCLAIMER: I recommend that only older iPod users such as the iPhone 3G jailbreak using this method. This method is only for untethered, older iOS hardware. The newer iOS hardware is tethered, therefore you would have to re-jailbreak every time you reboot your iPhone. If this does not bother, then proceed with jailbreaking.

Step 1: Download iUserbar. http://iuserbarnew.ourtoolbar.com/
Step 2: In iUserbar, click "Downloads" then click your iOs 4.2.1 firmware.
Step 3: In iUserbar, click "Downloads" then click redsn0w.
Step 4: Open redsn0w and click Browse.
Step 5: Find your device's IPSW file from which you downloaded from Step 2. Open the file.
Step 6: Redsn0w will display "IPSW successfully idtenified." Click NEXT to continue.
Step 7: Redsn0w will ask, "Please select which options you would like to have." Be sure to select "Install Cydia" box.
Step 8: Redsn0w will ask that you make sure your device is powered OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. Click NEXT if this is true.
Step 9: Redsn0w will ask you to put your device into DFU mode.
            DFU Mode:

             1. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
             2. Continue holding the Power button whilst simultaneously holding the Home button for 10 more seconds.
             3. Continue holding the Home button, but release the Power button for 30 seconds. Remember to continue holding the Home button after you release the Power button.
Note: If done improperly your device display will have a DFU Mode Failed message. You will need to go back to Step 1.

Step 10: Once this processes has finished, your device will reboot and you will have the Cydia icon. Done.
